Sea of Time – Tohoku<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This sketch is an idea I have in mind for the repose of the souls of the victims of the Great East Japan earthquake in March 2011.<\/p>\n

As of 2015, 15,890 people have died as a result of this disaster, and 2,589 people are still missing. By using 3,000 LEDs, I am thinking of exhibiting the \u201cLight of Life\u201d of those who passed away.<\/p>\n

The LEDs count numbers from 9 to 1, excluding the number 0. When counting numbers, it represents life, and when the lights go off, it signifies death. The LEDs count numbers (life and death) over and over again to represent \u201clife\u201d itself. In Buddhism, this is called \u201cSamsara\u201d, and means reincarnation, the indefinite cycle of life and death. In other words, death is not the end; it is a preparatory period for the next life.<\/p>\n

The counting speed can be adjusted down or up, the same way each life has a unique character. I call this (adjustment process) \u201ctime setting\u201d, and this time I would like the family members of the victims to do this work. I want them to \u201cset time\u201d with their loved ones in mind, to be remembered everlastingly in the land of Tohoku.<\/p>\n

The waterproof LEDs will be glowing in a huge pool. Many of the victims died from the Tsunami that came after the earthquake, and most of the missing people are said to be in the sea. However, the bereaved families hardly seem to bear grudges against the sea, for many years people lived together with it. That is why I thought the sea was an appropriate place of repose of the souls of the deceased.<\/p>\n

\u201cSea of Time\u201d was my first work, with which I first presented the key concepts in 1988. I am hoping to install this work near the sea at Oshika peninsula in 2017, on the 30th<\/sup> year since I presented my concepts, as a participating work of Reborn-Art Festival. I am planning to exhibit a part of the work from July 22. It is also the 6th<\/sup> anniversary of the earthquake in 2011. It is a period of time called \u201cShichikaiki (the sixth-anniversary of a person\u2019s death)\u201d in Japan. I hope this work to be a topos, where everybody can gather in the memory of the deceased.<\/p>\n
