「時の海－東北」
このプロジェクトは、2011年に起きた東日本大震災で「亡くなられた人々への鎮魂」と、あの「未曾有の大災害の記憶」を後世に伝え残すため、また、未来への希望に繋げていくために実現したいと願っているものである。
東日本大震災で亡くなられた方は2015年現在、死者１万５８９０人、行方不明者２５８９人である。作品にはおよそ3000個のLEDを使用し、これら亡くなられた方々の「永遠の命の光」として展示したいと考えている。
LEDは数字を9-1とカウントし、0は表示しない。これは、数字をカウントしているときは「生」を、0で暗闇になる時は「死」を意味している。LEDは数字のカウント（生と死）を繰り返し、全体で「命」そのものを表現している。仏教ではこれを「輪廻転生」と呼び生命の永遠性を説いている。つまり、「死」は終わりではなく、次の「生」への準備期間と捉えるのだ。
カウントするスピードは遅くしたり早くしたりすることができ、それぞれの「命」の個性を表す。このスピードを決める作業を「タイム設定」と呼ぶが、今回は震災で亡くなられたの方のご遺族やその関係者の方々、そして、未来を担う東北の子どもたちにも参加して設定をしてもらおうと考えている。亡くなられた方々への想いを込めて「タイム設定」していただき、東北の地に、ご家族の「命の光」を永遠に伝え残してほしいからだ。（参加についてはこちらへ）
さらに、これを制作するためのサポーターも同時に募集する。これによって全国の人々が、もう一度、東北に目を向けてもらい、東北の地へ訪れてほしいと願うからだ。（サポートについて詳しくはこちらへ）
設定したLEDは防水加工を施し、水を張った巨大なプールの中に置かれ、水の中で光らせる予定である。これは、もちろん海を象徴している。大震災で亡くなられた方の多くは震災後に来た大津波による被害であり、行方不明の方のほとんどは海だといわれている。しかし、残されたご家族にお話を聞くと、海への恨み言を話す人はほとんどいない。東北沿岸部の人々は長い間、人と海とは共に生きてきたからなのだろうか。だから、私は、亡くなられた方々の鎮魂はやはり海と結ばれた場所がふさわしいと思っている。
「Sea of Time」は、1988年に作られた私のデビュー作で、このコンセプトを発表して３０年が経つ。今回、この作品を30年目の2017年、海が見える牡鹿半島の一角に、「リボーンアートフェステイバル」の参加作品として、7月22日からその一部を展示するつもりである。石巻市牡鹿半島に設置する。ちょうどその年は、2011年の大震災から6年目。日本では、亡くなられた方々を偲ぶ一つの区切り目である「七回忌」にあたる。その時に、みんなが亡き方々を偲ぶ、トポスとしてこの作品を残したい。そんな思いで一杯である。

Sea of Time – Tohoku
This sketch is an idea I have in mind for the repose of the souls of the victims of the Great East Japan earthquake in March 2011.
As of 2015, 15,890 people have died as a result of this disaster, and 2,589 people are still missing. By using 3,000 LEDs, I am thinking of exhibiting the “Light of Life” of those who passed away.
The LEDs count numbers from 9 to 1, excluding the number 0. When counting numbers, it represents life, and when the lights go off, it signifies death. The LEDs count numbers (life and death) over and over again to represent “life” itself. In Buddhism, this is called “Samsara”, and means reincarnation, the indefinite cycle of life and death. In other words, death is not the end; it is a preparatory period for the next life.
The counting speed can be adjusted down or up, the same way each life has a unique character. I call this (adjustment process) “time setting”, and this time I would like the family members of the victims to do this work. I want them to “set time” with their loved ones in mind, to be remembered everlastingly in the land of Tohoku.
The waterproof LEDs will be glowing in a huge pool. Many of the victims died from the Tsunami that came after the earthquake, and most of the missing people are said to be in the sea. However, the bereaved families hardly seem to bear grudges against the sea, for many years people lived together with it. That is why I thought the sea was an appropriate place of repose of the souls of the deceased.
“Sea of Time” was my first work, with which I first presented the key concepts in 1988. I am hoping to install this work near the sea at Oshika peninsula in 2017, on the 30th year since I presented my concepts, as a participating work of Reborn-Art Festival. I am planning to exhibit a part of the work from July 22. It is also the 6th anniversary of the earthquake in 2011. It is a period of time called “Shichikaiki (the sixth-anniversary of a person’s death)” in Japan. I hope this work to be a topos, where everybody can gather in the memory of the deceased.
